I had a similar problem. No matter if I was in TinyMCE or JCE, clicking those various content types from the dropdown would either ignore my clicks or open a broken dialog which was stuck in never-never land. What resolved it for me was to resolve the multilingual issues my site was having. Soon as I got all the multilingual items to report green check marks, and show that I have a published default home page for each language and have the Home Menu Item in a Home Mudule Item set all languages then set to unpublished... now I can use either TinyMCE or JCE to add to my heart's content. I did not revert back to have a broken MultiLingual in order to prove I again would have had a broken Media insert feature. I just kept moving on...
