That sounds unusual. Does the website display errors or write them into an error log?
Go to System Dashboard - Manage - Site Modules and go to the Smart Search module displayed at the front end. The first tab is Module. Do the selections look all right? The screenshot below shows a combination that works in a remote Joomla 5.2.1 website.
